Thesis Project - Evaluating Kotlin on iOS using KMP

BACKGROUND

Cross-platform programming for mobile has been around for a while, e.g., React Native & Flutter. In recent years, Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) has gained traction as an alternative for mobile cross-platform programming but is still not widely adopted.

This thesis will focus on evaluating Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) as a viable alternative for iOS development, specifically focusing on its performance, usability, and integration capabilities compared to native Swift development.

TASK

Depending on your interests or previous experience, the thesis could focus on different aspects. You could, for example:

  • Evaluate the runtime performance, memory usage, and app launch time of iOS applications developed using Kotlin Multiplatform compared to those developed natively in Swift.
  • Analyze the trade-offs between code reusability and platform-specific optimizations. Investigate how much platform-specific code is required to achieve optimal performance. Assess the impact of Kotlin Multiplatform on development speed and maintainability.
