As immersive technologies like Augmented and Virtual Reality continue to grow, there is an increasing demand for 3D content that enables natural user experiences. An interesting possible application revolves around e-commerce, especially within the fashion industry: rather than browsing flat product photos, wouldn’t it be cool to see the shirt you want, in 3D and right in front of your eyes, but still from the comfort of your home? A more realistic preview of the products might not just be fun but also help customers make better choices, avoiding wasteful and time-consuming returns.
In this thesis project, you will investigate methods for generating a 3D model starting from a picture of clothes. A possible solution might involve identifying pieces of clothing in the image, classifying them into a set of categories, generating a 3D mesh (or matching an existing mesh corresponding to the type of garment), and applying a texture obtained from the original picture. Other approaches might include using one or more generative AI models to obtain the final 3D model directly.
Part of the project might also consist of setting up a workbench for stable analysis of the implementation in terms of efficacy, efficiency, and accuracy. Depending on the methodology explored to solve the task, you might also need to gather or generate a dataset consisting of images, videos, or other input data.
You will have complete freedom to choose the direction you prefer, as well as access to all necessary resources (a workstation equipped with a powerful GPU, software licenses, and of course, guidance from our designers and engineers at Bontouch).
