In the current version of the SJ mobile app, train route visualisation is done without any exact data on where the tracks actually are. The current method uses linear interpolation between train stops instead of the actual train route, which can result in “interesting” routes. The most obvious ones being routes crossing several of Sweden’s biggest lakes. No, there are no tunnels.
Trafikverket keep detailed plans of every track the Swedish trains use, and despite not being in the easily accessible format, it should make it possible to improve the visualisation.
Create a route estimation tool using track data from Trafikverket.
Investigate if the data set can be reduced to fit into a mobile app.
Find out if the algorithm be optimised to run in real time on a mobile device.
